According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 36 million Americans have a hearing loss. Research from the ASHA also discovered that, only 20% of those individuals who might benefit from treatment actually seek help.

Perhaps you suspect that a loved one is experiencing hearing loss? When people first experience hearing loss, they find it emotionally difficult. As a result, many people avoid making an appointment with an audiologist. To help you encourage your loved one to see an audiologist, consider these five tips.

Approach the subject gently

If you’ve noticed that someone is experiencing hearing loss, they’ve likely noticed it too! They are probably putting off the audiology appointment. Maybe they are worrying, or do not want to wear a hearing aid. Whatever the reason, you’ll need to approach the subject gently.

Ask them if they’ve had any trouble with their hearing recently? Tell them that you can book them an appointment with an audiologist if they would like. Be sensitive and helpful, but not too pushy. If they are resistant, respect this. Ensure that you are talking with them rather than telling them what to do.

Suggest a hearing test together

Suggest that you both go and get your ears tested together. Tell your loved one that you’re booking a hearing test and ask them if they would like to be booked in also. If they resist, explain that it’s advised that everyone has their hearing testing at least once a year.

Focus on the idea that it would be nicer to go together. Remember, your loved one may not agree the first time you ask them. You can always leave the subject, and try again another time.

Do a bit of research

By doing a bit of research, you’ll have a better understanding of the subject. With the right knowledge it will be far easier to talk to your loved one. For instance, you might research the best types of hearing aids.

If you think that your loved one would prefer a discreet hearing aid an in the canal (ITC) is a great choice. These are fitted right inside the ear canal. These hearing aids offer dual microphone features, for improved sound quality.

Explain why it’s important

When hearing loss is left untreated, it can get worse. It may be helpful to explain this to your loved one if they are particularly reluctant to make an audiology appointment. Tell your loved one that there is a range of hearing technology available which can help to improve their quality of life.

One research study about hearing aids concluded that, using hearing aids contributes to better health, higher income, better family and social life.
