When it comes to being fitted with hearing aids, it can help to know how to fix them if something goes wrong. Your hearing aids are medical magic in miniature, and this means that the occasional malfunction isn’t unusual – though it is unfortunate. You need to ensure that your hearing aids are in the best possible condition, but even those who look after their hearing aids really well will find that they can break down from time to time.

It can be helpful to talk to your audiologist about how to carry out hearing aid repairs should yours break down, but it’s even more to get to know what to do in a pinch. We’ve got the dos and don’ts of hearing aid repairs to share with you.

Do:

  • Keep the batteries fresh: The battery in your hearing aid isn't going to live forever, which means that you need to know how to change the battery and put in a fresh one from time to time. If the battery has stopped working, it may be a good idea to change up the battery and fit it with another one. You will find that your hearing aids will only last five to seven days with a battery so make sure that you have batteries in the house.
  • Keep it clean: Hearing aids – like any other supportive medical device – need to be cleaned regularly if you don't want them to build-up and compromise your hearing further. Your audiologist will be able to show you how to do this, so don't forget to ask!
  • See your audiologist: If you believe that there is something wrong with your device it’s not a good idea to just leave it alone. You need to speak up and get some advice about what to do. Your audiologist can talk you through the issues and ensure that you feel confident about your hearing aids and your ability to hear.

Don’t:

  • Do it yourself: When it comes to your hearing aids, your audiologist will tell you how delicate these pieces of technology are. It looks straightforward, but this is science shrunk down to fit a tiny earpiece. You need to remember that if you mess with one small piece of your hearing aid, you could be making the problem worse and not fixing it at all!
  • Stop wearing them: It can be worse for your medical technology to be left alone if they stop working. Putting them aside for a long period of time and not using them can lead to further complications with your hearing, so speak to your audiologist and get some advice.

If you are struggling with your hearing aids and believe that you need hearing aid repairs, then the best thing that you can do is speak to your audiologist today and see how they can help you. Don't compromise your hearing further by leaving your hearing aids to one side and forgotten about!
