When you have been through the process for prescribing a new hearing aid, there can be few things that are more exciting than getting the call that your device is ready for fitting and you can come in for an appointment to get it sorted out. Your audiologists’ office will let you know when it’s time to come and get your hearing aid, will arrange a time and date that suits you and then you can look forward to getting back the hearing that you had lost.

Of course, before you can go back out into the world with your new hearing aid, there is the fitting appointment to traverse, one final step between you and better hearing. Don’t worry, this is the most straightforward part of the whole process, and below we will take you through exactly how your audiologist will make the journey easier on you. This is what awaits you when you sit down in the waiting room for one final time.

The audiologist will ensure you have a range of hearing

The most important part of hearing aid fittings is when the audiologist takes real ear measures. This is done by inserting a thin tube microphone into your ear to sit next to the eardrum, and gauge how loudly sounds are heard within the ear. The audiologist will play sounds at various levels, and detect low, moderate and high levels.

They will then insert the hearing aid, leaving the microphone in place, and play the same sounds to ascertain how those sounds are heard with the amplification. Using the information they gather, the audiologist will ensure that you can hear sounds such as quiet speech, as well as louder noises, without distortion or discomfort.

The audiologist will ensure the hearing aid fits

At a previous appointment, a mold of your ear will have been taken in order to ensure that the earpiece of the hearing aid will fit snugly. This is an important part of the process, as gaps in the fit can cause sound to be lost, muffled or distorted in a way which will not just affect the ability to hear, but could be actively uncomfortable. When the hearing aid arrives, and that you are present for testing, the audiologist will then make sure the device fits as it should and gives the amplification you need with the comfort levels they deserve.

The audiologist will show you how to use the hearing aid

Now that you have you hearing device, they are just one step from going out into the world and enjoying their renewed hearing. The audiologist will show you how to adjust noise levels on your device and how to use the hearing aid overall. They will also demonstrate how a hearing aid is cleaned and how to know when it has been fully cleaned. They will also demonstrate how to change, charge and replace batteries in the device so that you gets the optimum performance from their device when it matters.
